The issue of public school restroom upkeep and maintenance has been a controversial issue for some time. Previously, schools in California were exempted from specific restroom code requirements and such issues were addressed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with individual school or District Policy. Because of the media attention and parent outcry which resulted from complaints regarding conditions in student restrooms at some K-12 facilities, lawmakers drafted and passed SB 892, a new law which requires all K-12 schools in California to now meet specific restroom maintenance and sanitation requirements as specified in Section 35292.5, of the Education Code.
